{"id":215,"date":"2015-06-02T22:06:30","date_gmt":"2015-06-03T04:06:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.grassmonk.net\/blog\/?p=215"},"modified":"2015-06-03T11:06:56","modified_gmt":"2015-06-03T17:06:56","slug":"poetism-commentary-stormy-weather","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.grassmonk.net\/blog\/2015\/06\/02\/poetism-commentary-stormy-weather\/","title":{"rendered":"Poetism Commentary: &#8220;Stormy Weather&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The poem in question: <a title=\"Stormy Weather\" href=\"\/pp\/stormy-weather\/\">Stormy Weather<\/a><\/p>\n<p>An alternative title for this poem would be &#8220;Letter to the Devil.&#8221;\u00a0 In LDS theology the Book of Mormon offers some insights to Satan&#8217;s workings in <a title=\"2 Nephi 26:22\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/bofm\/2-ne\/26.22?lang=eng#21\" target=\"_blank\">2 Nephi 26:22<\/a> and <a title=\"2 Nephi 28:21-23\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lds.org\/scriptures\/bofm\/2-ne\/28.21-23?lang=eng#20\" target=\"_blank\">2 Nephi 28:21-23<\/a>.\u00a0 Basically the idea is that the devil will attempt to be our friend, slowly putting a &#8220;flaxen cord&#8221; around us so we don&#8217;t realize we are under his control, until one day it&#8217;s too late, we&#8217;re bound by his &#8220;awful chains, from whence there is no deliverance,&#8221; and he gleefully abandons us and moves on to the task of ensnaring the next poor soul.<\/p>\n<p>I tried to capture this idea in my poem, and I like the subtle progression the speaker makes in realizing that he is becoming more and more trapped.\u00a0 It starts out somewhat light-hearted: &#8220;we&#8230; played our game together,&#8221; progresses to &#8220;let&#8217;s go tonight,&#8221; and arrives at the conclusion that &#8220;we dug my grave together,&#8221; all while not quite making the full logical connection that this relationship is not a good one, because he keeps coming back to it.\u00a0 I think this is something that everyone struggles with on some level.<\/p>\n<p>The last stanza is also based in LDS theology, but it is also a bit overly-negative by my reading today.\u00a0 While Mormons believe that eventually Satan will be cast down forever, the phrase &#8220;your demise will be my finest hour&#8221; seems displaced from the spirit in which the triumph will take place.\u00a0 That spirit is not one of boastfulness, but of relief and gratitude toward the delivering power.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t think I conveyed that sentiment, but I also think that I was 18 when I wrote this and overcoming Satan&#8217;s ceaseless attacks was constantly on my mind.<\/p>\n<p>As for the style of this poem, I generally enjoy it.\u00a0 I think I did a pretty good job with the rhyming pattern, and I think the meter generally flows pretty well.\u00a0 Similar to something I <a title=\"Poetism Commentary: &quot;All The World\u2019s Attention&quot;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.grassmonk.net\/blog\/2006\/10\/02\/poetism-commentary-all-the-worlds-attention\/\" target=\"_blank\">mentioned many years ago<\/a> in a different commentary, the repeated use of the line &#8220;then came stormy weather&#8221; probably had some influence from Paul Simon&#8217;s &#8220;Hearts and Bones.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The poem in question: Stormy Weather An alternative title for this poem would be &#8220;Letter to the Devil.&#8221;\u00a0 In LDS theology the Book of Mormon offers some insights to Satan&#8217;s workings in 2 Nephi 26:22 and 2 Nephi 28:21-23.\u00a0 Basically the idea is that the devil will attempt to be our friend, slowly putting a [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[3],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.grassmonk.net\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/215"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.grassmonk.net\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.grassmonk.net\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.grassmonk.net\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.grassmonk.net\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=215"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.grassmonk.net\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/215\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.grassmonk.net\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=215"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.grassmonk.net\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=215"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.grassmonk.net\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=215"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
