Several weeks ago I was going through some boxes in my closet and found two poems that I wrote for assignments in a French class at BYU. \u00a0This is the sillier of the two; the other will be the subject of my next commentary. \u00a0This is called “Le Singe et Son Thon” (“The Monkey and His Tuna”).<\/p>\n
Il y avait une tortue qui voulait du thon,
\na demand\u00e9 d’un singe s’il en aurait un peu.
\nLe singe a dit, Quoi? \u00a0Le demander \u00e0\u00a0moi?
\nAllez ailleurs, attendez dans une queue!
\nLa tortue a pleur\u00e9, elle a mendi\u00e9,
\nDonnez-moi du thon, j’en ai besoin!
\nLe singe a glouss\u00e9, glouss\u00e9, et glouss\u00e9,
\na dit, C’est ton probl\u00e8me, pas le mien!
\nLa tortue a cri\u00e9, Pourquoi \u00eatre vilain?
\nEst-ce que vous ne m’aimez pas?
\nLe singe a dit, non, mais j’ai une le\u00e7on
\nque je vous enseigne maintenant:
\nLe thon sera bon<\/em>
\n la semaine prochaine<\/em>
\n mais cette semaine-ci<\/em>
\n il faut que tu te baignes.<\/em>
\nEn r\u00e9alisant qu’elle se sentait mauvais,
\nla tortue a promis un bain,
\nseulement si le singe lui promet du pain\u2014
\nle thon\u2014avec un peu de lait.<\/p><\/blockquote>\nAnd a rough translation:<\/p>\n
There was a turtle who wanted some tuna,
\nand asked a monkey if he had any.
\nThe monkey said, What? Ask me?
\nGo somewhere else, wait in a line!
\nThe turtle cried and begged,
\nGive me tuna, I need some!
\nThe monkey chuckled, chuckled, and chuckled,
\nsaid, That’s your problem, not mine!
\nThe turtle yelled, Why be mean?
\nDon’t you love me?
\nThe monkey said, no, but I have a lesson
\nto teach you now:
\nTuna will be good<\/em>
\n next week<\/em>
\n but this week<\/em>
\n you need to bathe.<\/em>
\nRealizing he smelled bad,
\nthe turtle promised a bath,
\nonly if the monkey would promise him bread\u2014
\ntuna\u2014with a bit of milk.<\/p><\/blockquote>\nWhile it’s silly, I’m impressed with myself that I managed to create the rhyming scheme in a foreign language. \u00a0And I got an A-, I think for some minor grammar errors (which I’ve corrected in the above text).<\/p>\n
