{"id":210,"date":"2014-06-25T21:32:59","date_gmt":"2014-06-26T03:32:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.grassmonk.net\/blog\/?p=210"},"modified":"2014-06-25T16:18:46","modified_gmt":"2014-06-25T22:18:46","slug":"poetism-commentary-a-new-beginning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.grassmonk.net\/blog\/2014\/06\/25\/poetism-commentary-a-new-beginning\/","title":{"rendered":"Poetism Commentary: &#8220;a new beginning&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The poem in question: <a href=\"\/pp\/a-new-beginning\/\">a new beginning<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I wrote this poem for an assignment in my freshman English class at BYU. \u00a0I don&#8217;t remember what the assignment was, specifically.<\/p>\n<p>As with many others, this poem is about inner demons and what ifs, but with a much more hopeful tone, kind of like <a href=\"\/pp\/from-now-on\/\">From now on<\/a>. \u00a0I may have mentioned this before, but I always found it much easier to write well (what I considered well, anyway) about bleaker subjects than happy ones, and in bleaker tones, so poem this was something of a breakthrough for me. \u00a0Not only is it hopeful in tone, but I think it&#8217;s also decently written. \u00a0Double whammy!<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t have the original copy, but I can tell from some erase marks in my notebook and an old web print out that the last stanza originally read differently. \u00a0The original version\u2014likely what I turned in for my assignment\u2014is:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>effortless though it may be<br \/>\nI cannot be brought down<br \/>\nI&#8217;ve been relinquished of myself<br \/>\nand set out toward what I&#8217;ve found<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In fact, all of the copies I have, except the one now on my web site, have that last line. \u00a0I do like &#8220;and set out toward higher ground&#8221; much better though. \u00a0In fact, I really like the message of the last stanza.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The poem in question: a new beginning I wrote this poem for an assignment in my freshman English class at BYU. \u00a0I don&#8217;t remember what the assignment was, specifically.
