{"id":186,"date":"2014-01-02T00:02:59","date_gmt":"2014-01-02T07:02:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.grassmonk.net\/blog\/?p=186"},"modified":"2014-06-23T16:57:57","modified_gmt":"2014-06-23T22:57:57","slug":"stuff-not-from-my-2013-goals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.grassmonk.net\/blog\/2014\/01\/02\/stuff-not-from-my-2013-goals\/","title":{"rendered":"Stuff not from my 2013 goals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sometimes it feels like I did more stuff outside of <a title=\"Goals for 2013\" href=\"http:\/\/www.grassmonk.net\/blog\/2013\/01\/28\/goals-for-2013\/\">my goals list<\/a> than inside.\u00a0 It also feels like I might copy and paste text from other blog entries as a introduction, almost verbatim, so as not to have to come up with something new, fresh, hip, vapid.\u00a0 Here is a reckoning of part of that, with some commentary as I deem a synonym for appropriate.\u00a0 This list also doesn\u2019t include movies from my <a title=\"My favorite (and not) movies of 2013\" href=\"http:\/\/www.grassmonk.net\/blog\/2014\/01\/01\/my-favorite-and-not-movies-of-2013\/\">2013 favorites list<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Books<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The Hunger Games<\/span> trilogy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>TV<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Hadn\u2019t seen before:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Arrested Development (season 4)<\/li>\n<li>Big Love (seasons 1-5)<\/li>\n<li>Brooklyn Nine-Nine (the first part of season 1)<\/li>\n<li>Marvel\u2019s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (the first part of season 1)<\/li>\n<li>Star Trek (seasons 1-3)<\/li>\n<li>Tiny Toon Adventures (seasons 1-3)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I&#8217;m not sure why I initially decided to watch <em>Big Love<\/em>, but I enjoyed watching it for the drama, and it affirmed my desire never ever to practice polygamy.<\/p>\n<p>I also began what I assume will be a very long journey of watching all of the <em>Star Trek<\/em> TV series and films.\u00a0 In 2013 I got through the original series and its successive films.\u00a0 Some of the episodes were really good, some were really awful, and most were just okay, I guess.\u00a0 In 2014 I plan to watch the <em>The Next Generation<\/em> TV series and its successive films.\u00a0 I want to try and watch <em>Deep Space Nine<\/em> and <em>Voyager<\/em>, too, and intersperse the <em>TNG <\/em>films chronologically, but we&#8217;ll see if that actually happens or if the other TV series get pushed to 2015.<\/p>\n<p>A big fan of <em>Arrested Development<\/em>, I eagerly awaited the new season 4.\u00a0 It mostly did not disappoint, though the format was very different from the original seasons of some years past.\u00a0 I do hope that Netflix produces a fifth season, and possibly more.<\/p>\n<p><em>Brooklyn Nine-Nine<\/em> and <em>Marvel\u2019s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.<\/em> are the two new shows this season that I added to my watch-as-they-are-airing list (well, after they air, but during the season, anyway).\u00a0 So far I&#8217;ve enjoyed them both.<\/p>\n<p><em>Had seen before:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Angel (seasons 1-5)<\/li>\n<li>Arrested Development (seasons 1-3)<\/li>\n<li>A Charlie Brown Christmas<\/li>\n<li>It&#8217;s Christmastime Again, Charlie Brown<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I wasn&#8217;t going to watch <em>Angel<\/em> along with <em>Buffy the Vampire Slayer<\/em> this year, but I did anyway.\u00a0 When I first watched <em>Buffy <\/em>and\u00a0<em>Angel<\/em> in 2010, it was alone as I slept on the couch while my wife was pregnant.\u00a0 This time we watched them together, <em>Buffy<\/em> on DVD from the set I bought a couple of years ago, and <em>Angel<\/em> on Netflix.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Movies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Hadn\u2019t seen before:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Atlantis: Milo&#8217;s Return<\/li>\n<li>Argo<\/li>\n<li>Beautiful Creatures<\/li>\n<li>The Black Cauldron<\/li>\n<li>Bolt<\/li>\n<li>Brother Bear<\/li>\n<li>Brother Bear 2<\/li>\n<li>Done the Impossible<\/li>\n<li>Enchanted<\/li>\n<li>Hercules<\/li>\n<li>The Fox and the Hound<\/li>\n<li>The Fox and the Hound 2<\/li>\n<li>Friends With Benefits<\/li>\n<li>The Hunchback of Notre Dame II<\/li>\n<li>LEGO Batman: The Movie \u2013 DC Superheroes Unite<\/li>\n<li>The Little Mermaid: Ariel\u2019s Beginning<\/li>\n<li>The Princess Diaries<\/li>\n<li>The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement<\/li>\n<li>Super<\/li>\n<li>Twilight<\/li>\n<li>The Twilight Saga: New Moon<\/li>\n<li>The Twilight Saga: Eclipse<\/li>\n<li>The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part One<\/li>\n<li>The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part Two<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I joined the Disney Movie Club twice in 2013 to update and expand my Disney movie collection.\u00a0 Due to Disney&#8217;s practice of packaging some of their &#8220;lesser&#8221; movies together with their direct-to-video sequels, I saw a few for the first time.\u00a0 Some were absolutely terrible (<em>Atlantis 2, Hunchback 2<\/em>) and some were more tolerable (<em>The Little Mermaid 3<\/em>).\u00a0 I also saw some Disney movies from the Animated Classics line for the first time, including <em>The Black Cauldron, <\/em><em>Hercules, The Fox and the Hound<\/em>, and <em>Bolt<\/em>.\u00a0 I thought I would like <em>Hercules<\/em> more than I did, but it was all right, I guess.\u00a0 <em>Bolt<\/em> wasn&#8217;t too bad, but the other two I could take or leave.<\/p>\n<p><em>Argo<\/em> won the 2013 Academy Award for Best Picture, and I liked it well enough.\u00a0 The LEGO Batman movie was lots of fun, expanding on the story of the second LEGO Batman video game. \u00a0<em>Super <\/em>was weird and quirky (and a bit too violent for me), but a good one-timer, I think.\u00a0 Nathan Fillion was great as always.<\/p>\n<p>I watched <em>Twilight <\/em>because I love my wife.\u00a0 They were very silly, and there&#8217;s definitely a moment when Edward starts to sparkle in the sun and the score is <em>quite <\/em>reminiscent of &#8220;Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>Had seen before:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>About a Boy<\/li>\n<li>Ace Ventura: Pet Detective<\/li>\n<li>Almost Heroes<\/li>\n<li>Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy<\/li>\n<li>The Aristocats<\/li>\n<li>Batman<\/li>\n<li>Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 1<\/li>\n<li>007: Skyfall<\/li>\n<li>Elf<\/li>\n<li>The Emperor&#8217;s New Groove<\/li>\n<li>Ernest Goes to Camp<\/li>\n<li>Ernest Goes to Jail<\/li>\n<li>Ernest Saves Christmas<\/li>\n<li>Ernest Scared Stupid<\/li>\n<li>The Fugitive<\/li>\n<li>Galaxy Quest<\/li>\n<li>Gone in 60 Seconds<\/li>\n<li>The Great Muppet Caper<\/li>\n<li>Home Alone<\/li>\n<li>Home Alone 2: Lost in New York<\/li>\n<li>Hot Rod<\/li>\n<li>The Hunchback of Notre Dame<\/li>\n<li>Inception<\/li>\n<li>The Island<\/li>\n<li>Kronk&#8217;s New Groove<\/li>\n<li>Lilo &amp; Wii<\/li>\n<li>Super Mario Bros. 3<\/li>\n<li>Super Mario World<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It seems that <em>New Super Mario Bros. Wii<\/em> is becoming at least an annual play in our house.\u00a0 With the recent purchase of a Wii U, <em>New Super Mario Bros.
