The poem in question: my pathetic attempt<\/a><\/p>\n

Originally titled, “my pathetic attempt to tell you how much,” This is one of those silly poems that you write for a girl.\u00a0 You know that kind?\u00a0 Yeah.<\/p>\n

The poem is dated 11\/3\/97, but I’m pretty sure the original pre-dates that by a few months.\u00a0 I do have the original text, which I’ll post below.<\/p>\n

The girl I was dating at the time (the second one from A Lesson To Be Learned<\/a>) used to tell me that I had a way with words, and I would joke, “Yeah, maybe sideways,” and thus the first stanza.<\/p>\n

The first part of third stanza is an obvious homage to (read: blatant ripoff of?) “Closer to Free” by the BoDeans.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, this is just a sappy love poem that I’m sure I meant with all my heart when I wrote it.\u00a0 After breaking up with this girl I made a resolution that I wouldn’t write any more stupid love poems for girls.\u00a0 Of course I broke it<\/a> with the next girl that dated.<\/p>\n

The original, even more sappy, version is reprinted below.\u00a0 It has a few extra lines, and a few changed lines.\u00a0 I like the “official” version better.<\/p>\n

a way with words?
\ndon’t I wish
\nyeah, maybe sideways

love knows no bounds
\nI love you
\nis that enough?
\nso much to say
\nsuch a miniscule vocabulary<\/p>\n

everybody wants respect
\nyou’ve got mine
\neverybody needs a chance
\nas many as you need
\nthey’re yours
\nask and ye shall receive<\/p>\n

love
\nwho needs it?
\nhope you do
\ncause you’ve got mine<\/p>\n

wish sideways was good enough
\nmaybe it will be
